Bubbles starts fifth grade next week – my how the time has flown!

He’s suiting up for football practice.  This year he graduates to tackle football (instead of flag football).  Before I know it, he’ll be all grown up and playing in high school.

Don’t forget to stop by Charnele’s blog and see what she’s posted, and have a great weekend!

is fifth grade the first year of what we call senior school? England has begun copying the US system but when I was at school it was completely different.

I’m not sure – how old are you when you enter senior school?

Fifth graders usually start the year at ten years old. It’s generally the last year of elementary school, with middle school comprising 6th-8th grades and high school 9th-12th. Some schools do it a bit differently, tacking 6th grade onto elementary and 9th grade onto middle school, but that’s how they did it when I was in school.

Now they’ve gone and screwed everything up in our school district. Our district is comprised of two towns, and each town used to have its own elementary school (K-5) (the middle school and high school were shared). Now, each town has a K-2 program, but they bus the 3rd and 4th-graders to one town while bussing the 5th graders to the other, which makes no kind of sense to me. They said it would save money, but I fail to see how.

Bubbles will be 11 in just a few weeks. The first time you have a kid hit double digits in age, it’s hard. And he starts middle school tomorrow…That’s just as hard…and a little bit weird because he’s got a few of my old teachers, though he had more of them in elementary school.

His elementary teachers have – I think a lot of them are due to retire soon. But the middle school has mainly new(er) teachers that I didn’t have, and I think it’s more or less true of the high school teachers, too. His best friend’s mom was my high school chemistry teacher, though, and it’s definitely weird interacting with her on a social level. No matter how many times she leaves messages with her given name, her name will always “Mrs.” in my book. 🙂
