A few months ago, I hosted a Pampered Chef party (I wanted an apple peeler/corer/slicer and figured this was a smart way to get one for a reasonable price). When the orders arrived, I was able to deliver most of them in one stop, but one of the orders required a drive to Holland (a nearby town, not the country). Because it was the middle of road construction season and the road into town was closed for bridge repair, I had to go north of town, then west, and come in from the northwest corner.
The sun was setting as I made my delivery and it was so beautiful that I pulled over to catch it before it was gone. When I shoot the sunset, I love to get it alone, with just the horizon or maybe a tree or two for company. I love the wild places where humanity’s fingerprint on the land is a light one. But I got the road with it in this shot, and the power lines running into town, and the more I look at this picture, the more I like it.
What do you like in a landscape shot?

I like the sky, as you have it but I also want to see a horizon and land to give it some kind of scale. Just like yours in fact. Nice shot.

Thanks! I love silhouettes in my sunrises/sunsets, like in those pictures of crops sticking up into the darkening sky. I love that. 🙂

I just wish I lived in a place where we could see the horizon and the sky.

Thank you! We have a lot of beautiful sunsets around here. And the sunrises aren’t bad, either, on the rare occasions when I’m up early enough to catch them. 🙂

Beautiful. Silhouettes like the powerlines you included work so effectively in sunsets. But I like the ‘nearly natural’ shots too.

I love love LOVE silhouettes in images like this! But just the sun, the sky, and the land can be beautiful, too – I’m lucky to live in such a beautiful place. 🙂

I know what you mean, Kay! Landscapes in their natural states have such beauty. I have hundreds and hundreds of photos of sky/beach/sea/hills variations – I’m sure you do too! :o)

I do! I said something to my husband a couple months ago about how I’d managed to take 1,000 pictures in the span of a month, and he replied, “And I bet 500 of them are of clouds.”
He’s not wrong. 🙂

Thank you! I do love the sky, especially in the summer when it’s so unbelievably blue and fluffy cotton ball clouds dot it as far as the eye can see. It’s been cloudy here the last few days and I miss seeing that beautiful blue sky. 🙂

Wonderful! Good balance, which is one thing I look for in a landscape shot.

Thanks! Usually when I’m shooting the sunset (or sunrise), I like to get more of the sky than the ground below it, but I really like how this one came out. 🙂
