We play cards in our family. Like, a lot. It’s kind of our family pastime. And we start ’em young.
Well, not that young, really – I think both Miss Tadpole and Bubbles were in school before we taught them any card games. But when Grandpa and Grandma were up over the weekend, Cricket and Thumper wanted in on the action, too.
They hate being left out.
It started off with Cricket teaming up with his aunt. That went okay, until Thumper decided that he wanted to play, too. He teamed up with Grandpa, but wasn’t satisfied with letting Grandpa hold the cards. We gave him a couple cards of his own to hold, but that actually made matters worse. I finally managed to decipher the sobbing squeals – he wanted all the cards.
At that point, we decided it was naptime. That really set him off.
But someday, they won’t be too little to play cards. Someday, they’ll learn how to play Up and Down the River with us, and then it’ll get really interesting (Miss Tadpole and Bubbles make it interesting already). It’ll be nice when, someday, family game night includes our entire family.
And maybe by that point, I’ll have figured out how to win. 😉
Do you have any family pastimes or traditions like family game night? What are they? Shout ’em out in the comments!

When my kids were younger, we loved to play Uno. My brother and I used to have board game marathons on rainy days. Good memories.

We have family game night on Sundays when we have both Miss Tadpole and Bubbles at our house. Sometimes we play cards, sometimes we play board games, and we always have fun.
I haven’t played Uno in a long time; that was one of my favorite games as a kid. What kinds of board games did you play with your brother?

I’ve heard of Settlers of Catan – I think we have a couple different versions and my husband keeps trying to talk me into playing – but what are the other two games?

I wish my family had a tradition of game night. I love playing cards and board games but even when we were all kids I had to badger everyone else for ages to persuade them to join me in a game!

We used to play board games quite a bit when I was a kid, but the only cards we ever really played were Uno and Kings in the Corners. My husband spent our third date teaching me how to play 500 so that we could join a card club at our church, and I’ve picked up a few other games since then. I consider myself lucky to have married a board game type. 🙂
What games did you like to play when you convinced your family to join you?

I used to play Chess with my daughter but it was hard to play with her leaping about all over the place and laughing every time she took one of my prawns (her word).

Seymour tried to teach the kids how to play chess – he was in a chess club in school and was pretty good – but they didn’t have the patience for it. Then they started making up their own rules…
He tried to teach me once when we started dating, but we haven’t played in ages and I’ve forgotten most of the little I once knew.
