In my reflection,
My mother watches me from
Far beyond the stars.
Others see her born
Again in me; they hear her
Every time I speak.
But I hear only
Me, and I see her only
Once in a great while.
I wish I saw her
More. I wish she were here to
Offer counsel, or
Even just a hug.
I wish I didn’t have to
Seek her out in a
Photo or in a
Memory, and I hope my
Children will never
Know this kind of pain.
I hope they’ll never have to
Seek me far beyond
The stars or wonder
What might have been, if only I
Hadn’t gone away.

Thanks! I’ve been thinking about her a lot lately; holidays are always hard when your parents are gone.

Yes, but there is so much of them here and with you to cherish.

Too true. It’s funny what reminds me of them; sometimes I swear I hear my dad speaking through my lips. 🙂

What a moving, moving poem! I cannot truly know the depth of your sorrow, but I can imagine it. I know you’ll be a wonderful mother twice over for your children, because your mother lives in you.

Aw, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙂 I sure hope I’m a decent mother. At the moment I feel like I’m coming apart at the seams. Hopefully that gets better after the holidays! 🙂
