Well, better late than never, right? It may be a hair after 11:00 p.m., but I’m going to get this out tonight yet.
I was thinking about changing things up here, since I haven’t done that in a while, and to get my creative juices percolating again. In case you’ve been under a rock for the past couple of years like I have, Facebook has become host to a wealth of memes, and I’m going to use them for inspiration…at least for a little while.
First up? This gem that I saw last Thursday:
It’s funny because it’s true. But even as it’s true, it’s also false–Hobby Lobby’s had Christmas stuff up since before Labor Day, and I’m pretty sure I heard a Christmas song or two while I was in there keeping my eyes peeled for signs that Jack Skellington was lurking about. I mean, it was Halloween in one aisle and Christmas in the next. You’d have been looking for him, too.

Personally, I don’t do the Christmas before Thanksgiving thing, but to each their own.

See, I could listen to Christmas music a lot longer than just the month of December, though I think it’s absolutely ridiculous to start selling Christmas in August, and I know that if I listened to Christmas tunes all year long, they would no longer be as special. But at the same time, I really like the sense of love and warmth that Christmas stirs in people, and I really wish we could keep that spirit alive all year long. I think that’s why I like Christmas music so much, especially since the holiday itself has lost something for me in recent years. It’s love and joy and family and community, and all of those other wonderful things that the end-of-year holidays are all about.

I would like to enjoy fall, including taking time for Thanksgiving as its own thing. A time to pause and join with the people I love to be happy for what we have together.
I feel like this rush to Christmas is rather obscene. I have come to regard Christmas as “consumer-fest”, in large measure because of all of the glitzy-glam marketing. I actually prefer Thanksgiving.

I feel like we didn’t really get a fall this year. It seems like it went straight from weeks of nineties to a couple of days of sweatshirt weather to snow. It’s only supposed to get into the twenties later on this week, and I’m not ready for that kind of negativity just yet. 😀
