Day 20: Music

So I went out to mow the lawn this afternoon, and sweet baby Kahless was it ever windy. I had so much grass and dirt in my eyes that it was absolutely ridiculous. On the bright side, I had some great tunes to keep me company, thanks to Pandora. (Also, I really love my wireless earbuds.)

I’ve been listening to a lot of world music lately; I find it gets my creative juices flowing because it transports me to a completely different world, which helps me get in the proper mindset for writing a completely different world. In no particular order, some of the artists that accompanied me yesterday on my four-hour trip around the yard include:

There is so much amazing music out there that it’s hard for me to choose a favorite artist or song or genre or album without producing a ridiculously extensive list. How about you – what are some of your favorites?

Day 15: Scent

You know what I miss? I miss the smell of fresh-cut grass. You don’t get that scent in the winter, and by my count, Iowa’s on at least its third winter.

I’m tired of winter. I want the grass to grow faster, I want it to be greener, and I want there to be flowers. I miss seeing flowers in the ditch on my way to work (I miss going to work, too, but that’s another post). I miss leaves on trees and the smell of rain in the air. I miss rain that doesn’t freeze when it hits the ground.

I miss the smell of barbecues, and the attendant guests.

I know I’ll experience all these sights and sounds and smells again in due time, but I’m not a patient person and I’m tired of waiting. I’m ready for the sun to shine again, both literally and figuratively. How about you?

Adventures in the kitchen

So what do you do when you can’t go out and do the normal things you would do on a Friday night? Well I don’t know about all of you, but I tried out a new recipe, and boy, are my feet sore!

(Tile floors + thin slippers with no support + a long night = very sore feet.)

I absolutely adore Panera’s French onion soup, and there was recently a recipe for said soup included in one of the New York Times newsletters I receive. I bought most of the ingredients earlier in the week, but I didn’t get a chance to try it out until last night.

The recipe…is behind the cut!

Momentum…I don’t has it

I had hoped to carry my November blogging momentum forward into December, but that didn’t happen. I could blame the holidays and being sick and all kinds of other things, and I wouldn’t be wrong, exactly, but I would be just making excuses. Because the truth is that if you really want to do something, you’ll find a way (and the time) to do it.

It’s not that I don’t want to blog, because I do. But my project for this month fell flat in a hurry.

See, I had this idea to document my Christmas spirit. Last year, one of my coworkers questioned my commitment to festivity, so I proved my love of Christmas by wearing something festive every day I worked for the entire month of December (and if I’m not mistaken, I may have started between Thanksgiving and December, but that’s not really important, I suppose). I only worked three days a week for most of the Christmas season last year due to my class schedule.

Apparently, however…

Day of Darkness

I went Black Friday shopping this year for only the second time ever, and the first time in over a decade. I didn’t get much, and the two things I did buy weren’t on sale. *sigh*

Story of my life.

What about you – do you go Black Friday shopping? Why or why not?

First Thanksgiving

We celebrated Thanksgiving with our extended family today, and I was super excited to capture this moment shortly after dinner:

See, Bubbles has decided that he doesn’t like board games. Or cards. Seymour and I love both, so getting him to join us in a game is often very difficult. And relations between Bubbles and his brothers are often strained, largely as a result of proximity (I think), so I was so excited to see Bubbles not only playing a board game with Cricket, but also seeming to enjoy it.

Of all my many blessings, I am most thankful for my wonderful family. How about you – what are you thankful for?

Stuck on Saturday

One of the worst parts of having migraines is how much they take from you. It’s not just during a migraine that I have problems, see. The aftermath of a migraine is almost as bad; I don’t know of an adequate way to describe the fatigue that comes after the pain. I feel completely drained.

That’s where I’m at today.

I have no energy, no motivation to do anything other than stay in bed and sleep. But I had to get up and take my kids to have breakfast with Santa this morning, so I put on my big girl panties and crawled out of bed. And breakfast seemed to help a little; we had pancakes and sausage and eggs and juice, and it’s been a long time since pancakes have tasted as good as they did this morning. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I wasn’t responsible for cooking and clean-up. 😀

When we got home, there was much adulting to do. I really don’t like adulting, but I’m sure no one else does, either. I sucked it up and managed to give myself the two shots of migraine medicine, which I was rather proud of myself for. But then I got a little dizzy, and a lot warm, and I decided the best thing to do was just lie down for a bit. I had told Seymour I would maybe need his help, but he wasn’t feeling well, either, and I didn’t want to be a pest, so I did it myself. He thought I’d been in the bathroom, so he hollered from the living room and asked if I was ever coming out so we could play cards with the kids.

When I finally emerged, I told him what was up.

“Why didn’t you ask me for help?” he asked.

I know he’d have willingly gotten up to help me, but what can I say? Sometimes I’m stubborn.

At any rate, after all that excitement, I found myself somewhat stuck on what to post today. I was going to post another meme, but maybe that can wait for tomorrow.

How was your Saturday?
