I arrived home last night to find two packages sitting by my garage.  We occasionally get packages, and occasionally our letter carrier actually leaves them by our garage as we’ve requested a whole bunch of times.  But last night, I was surprised to find that one of them was addressed to me.

I hadn’t ordered anything recently, so what in the world could it be?  The return address indicated that it had come from California, but I couldn’t remember if the ZIP code listed was the same as my bestie’s or not, and if it was, I couldn’t figure out what she would be mailing me.

But then I opened the box, and remembered that I’d joined Blurb’s Coffee & Quill Society back in November, and here they were sending me a free coffee mug!  I do love freebies, especially the useful sort.  Now I have something with which to imbibe my writerly go-juice at home, and I can’t wait to try it out tonight. 🙂

Our annual family photo book arrived today, a day earlier than I’d expected.  So to celebrate, here’s a picture from said album:

Cricket riding Daddy around the room proved easier to capture than a nice picture of everyone in front of the Christmas tree.

I use Blurb to create these books each year, and the quality is fantastic.  (This is in no way a promotional post; I’m just really happy with the quality of their products.)  I ordered the first one for our first wedding anniversary as a way to document the first year of our marriage; I wish I’d captioned those pictures, but I didn’t really get into the different layout designs and caption options until the following year.  I looked through the 2013 book this afternoon after it arrived and was surprised by how much I’d forgotten about the events of last year, and how much the kids had changed.

Every time we take a picture that comes out particularly hilarious now, we tell the kids it’s going in the book.  Of course, with Miss Tadpole the reigning Queen of the Funny Face and Cricket and Thumper hamming it up at every opportunity, that means I have my work cut out for me when it comes to choosing which pictures make the cut and which ones don’t.  Still, it’s a lot of fun making these books, and the kids love looking through them year after year.

Do you do anything like this in your family?

Midnight ramblings

Since my late-night rambling appears to be so popular, I thought I’d share a couple other random late-night scrawlings for your reading amusement.  These are a bit dated, but I happened to run across them late last night (or early this morning, however you want to look at it) during my bout of insomnia.  And now, my sleep-deprived thoughts on a couple of my writing projects:

2/20

It’s late, nearly midnight, and I have to work in the morning.  Everyone else is sleeping, warm and content in their beds, but not me.  I’m sitting here, alone in the living room, wrapped up in my favorite blanket and wishing I hadn’t had that second liter of Dr. Pepper earlier.  I’m wide awake, despite taking two muscle relaxers.  Usually they knock me out, but not tonight.  Tonight I feel compelled to write. I feel strangely adrift…
