Revised!

I finally got around to revising my first page, as posted here for Michelle Hauck’s first page critique blog hop.  It’s taken a lot of time, a lot of thought, and a lot of quiet to get something figured out, but I think it’s good.  It’s longer, but less wordy, and hopefully, more showy and less telly.  Either way, it wouldn’t be what it is without your input, so thank you very much!

I’ve posted the revision at the top of the original post (clearly marked so you know what’s what), and would love some comments on the revision as well.  Because, you know, we writers are nothing if not insecure.  But on the off chance that you don’t feel like digging back through ten days of blog posts, I’ve also posted it for your reading pleasure below.

“I would very much like to, sir,” Prince Vegin said.

Last night was Miracle on Main, my hometown’s annual Christmas kickoff.  Among other activities, they had a whole room set aside for Santa to see visitors:

Thumper didn’t say a whole lot, but that was okay, because Cricket did all the talking for him. 🙂  It was quite possibly the most adorable Santa encounter I’ve ever witnessed (at least with my kids).

Do your kids like going to see Santa?  Or do they scream in terror at the sight of him?

First page critique blog hop!

The lovely and talented Michelle Hauck is running a blog hop to critique first pages and I am super excited to be taking part!  If you’d like to join in the fun, here’s the post with all the details.  Methinks the first page of The Price of Mercy could use a bit of help, but I’m not entirely sure where, so if you’ve got ideas on what would take it from blah to AMAZING, please, drop ’em in the comments below!

Revision (The revised version is a bit longer than 250 words (think ~280), but I wanted to include everything I covered in the original entry, so you get an extra thirty words of fun). 🙂

Adult Fantasy

“Please, your Highness, have mercy.  I beg you.”

“I would very much like to, sir,” Prince Vegin said.  Light filtered into the gallery through twin rows of stained glass windows, exaggerating the poor farmer’s haggard appearance.  “I sympathize with you, but drought or no, you’ve still got taxes to pay.  I cannot simply let you go.”

“Your Highness, I’ll do anything – anything at all – only let me go back to my family.”  Dirty tears carved grooves through the layers of grime on his face, but hope shone in his eyes.

Before Vegin could reply, the chamber’s heavy wooden door burst open.  The prince flinched as his father stalked into the room, the queen trailing behind him.  King Tol’s gaze swept the room as the court fell to its knees.  The guards scattered about the room stood a little straighter, not wanting to provoke the king’s famous temper.  The peasant trembled before him, suddenly afraid for his life.  The prince groaned inwardly – he hated fighting with his father, especially in public.

“Vegin!”  Tol’s voice boomed through the chamber.  “If you’re not going to sentence this man, I’ll be more than happy to do it for you.”

The prince’s eyes narrowed.

Photo Friday: Halloween!

That’s right, it’s All Hallows’ Eve.  For the first time in a very long time, we didn’t hand out candy tonight.  Not that we ever had many kids stop at our house before, but since we’re in the country now, it seemed rather pointless to buy candy for trick-or-treaters who will never stop.

This is also the first year we took Cricket and Thumper trick-or-treating.  I found a Scooby Doo costume for Thumper at a local secondhand shop, and Cricket went as his best pal, Shaggy.  Miss Tadpole was a goddess, and Bubbles wore his football uniform, a Rebel football player one last time (this year, anyway).  He went trick-or-treating with his dad, though, so I’ll have to wait a year to get a picture of all four of them together in their costumes.

The boys were disappointed this morning when I wouldn’t let them wear their costumes to daycare, but while my stitching was good enough to hold up through this evening’s candy hunt, I didn’t trust it to hold out all day, especially the way Thumper likes to romp around (his costume required a bit of sewing (by which I mean about four hours’ worth because I had to hand sew it all) to make it wearable). I needn’t have worried, though – he faceplanted while tearing down a darkened street on the final leg of tonight’s journey and split a seam in his shoulder, but my stitching held up perfectly. 🙂

What do you do for Halloween?  Do you hand out candy, or take the kids around, or both, or neither?  Don’t forget to check out Charnele’s blog and see what she’s up to on this spooky holiday.  Happy Halloween! 🙂

And now, a point of clarification about yesterday’s reference to Cinnamon Batman.  Cricket has been insisting lately that he is Cinnamon Batman.  The other day, he came up to me and we had the following conversation:

cinnamonbatmanC: “You can’t call me Cricket – I’m not Cricket Kauffman anymore. I’m Cinnamon Batman, so you can call me Cinnamon Batman now.”

M: “Why Cinnamon Batman? Why not just Batman?”

C: “Because I like cinnamon toast, and Batman likes cinnamon toast, so that’s why I’m Cinnamon Batman.”

If he had his way, he’d wear this for trick-or-treating, but since the high is only supposed to be around 40°F and since there’s no way we’re getting anything warm underneath that shirt, Mr. Cinnamon Batman is just going to have to settle for being Shaggy to Thumper’s Scooby Doo. 🙂

It’s taken a while, but we’re finally unpacking some more of the boxes from when we moved, including the ones containing our Nintendo and the games that go with it.  Well, the Nintendo emulator, anyway – our actual Nintendo was apparently damaged during our move.

Anyway, Seymour, Bubbles, and I enjoyed a rousing game of Duck Hunt the other night, much to Thumper’s amusement.  I’m still not sure which was more entertaining – the game or Thumper’s reaction to it.  He was absolutely enthralled, and the only thing that got him to stop shouting, “He got him!” or, “He missed him!” was when we turned the game off and sent him to bed.

It was pretty hilarious.

What are some of your favorite video games?

Photo Friday: Haunted

There’s an old hospital in the town I work in.  I’m not sure how long ago it closed, or why, really, because the building now houses a doctor’s office and a home health care agency, but shuttered hospitals never fail to arouse my curiosity (this despite the fact that, for me, there’s something inherently petrifying in the thought of ghostly physicians of yore (thanks, House on Haunted Hill)).

hauntedhospital

This particular building also hosts a haunted hospital tour each October.  I’ve never been through it, but it does sound fun (though not for Cricket and Thumper, as they’re too little to see the amusement in being terrified).  Tomorrow night is the last night for it this year, and all the proceeds are invested in the community, which makes it fun and beneficial. 🙂

Don’t forget to stop by Charnele’s blog and check out her haunted photo.

Have you ever been through a haunted house?  What was it like?  Would you do it again?

We went to another Panther football game yesterday, and it was a lot of fun.  We tailgated in the afternoon before the game, we played a couple games of bean bag toss, and generally had a great time.

pantherband

Of course, the real reason I go to football games (other than to hang out with great friends) is for the band.  Back in high school, I went to home games because I was in the band.  Now that my marching band days are well behind me, I go simply to enjoy the pregame and halftime performances.  Once a band geek, always a band geek. 🙂

Every time I leave the house, say for work in the mornings, I have to chase Opal out of the garage. Cricket has gotten quite good at wrangling her (and she’s gotten quite good about letting him). But today it was Thumper’s turn:

Opal’s gotten pretty good about letting Thumper manhandle her, too. And it’s a good thing, because apparently he doesn’t mind getting scratched. He just wants to hold them and love them and pet them and hug them and never let them go (although he doesn’t seem to care one way or another about naming them George). 🙂

Photo 365 #53: Nighttime

This week’s Daily Post Photo Challenge is all about night photography, which I dearly love but don’t do enough of.  I’ve seen some pretty amazing silhouettes so far, and while I love them, this is one of my favorite nighttime shots:

fireworks

I didn’t think my phone would capture the fireworks very well, but I was pleasantly surprised.  This came out much better than I could have possibly hoped for. 🙂
