Photo Friday: Birthday throwback edition!

Today’s throwback post is interesting in its age.  See, I took these pictures last night – they’re my birthday gifts.  But they both hail from the ’90s (literally, in the case of the one), so I feel justified in calling them throwbacks:

I LOVED *NSYNC when I was younger.  Oh, who am I kidding?  I still love them.  When it came time to pick between Team *NSYNC and Team BSB, I was the one in the middle clutching my posters of JC and Nick and pleading for both of them.  Even today, I still can’t decide which group I like better.  So when my sister gave me this poster-cube-thingy, I couldn’t help laughing and then grinning like an idiot all the way home.

Buffy was – apparently – the continuation of a trend.  We watched the 1992 movie on Monday night, followed by The Lost Boys on Tuesday night.  The whole vampire thing started me thinking about Angel, the box set of which lives in the bottom of one of our DVD cabinets, and I decided I’d rather like to watch it.  Except that I didn’t watch Buffy when it originally aired (I didn’t get the channel *sigh*), and I wondered how much backstory I’d be missing if I watched Angel without having seen Buffy.

Seymour to the rescue!  We watched the first two episodes of Buffy last night and have a marathon planned for the weekend.  Good times, great oldies. 🙂

I think I’ve written about how we celebrate birthdays in my family before – what do you do?

Photo Friday guilt

So, today’s theme is guilty pleasures.  Since I’ve been über busy this week and didn’t have time to appropriately photograph my guilty pleasure, please enjoy this alternate shot:

I’ll admit it: I love the Backstreet Boys (see top left tape).  I love ‘N SYNC.  I love 98°.  And I retroactively love the Spice Girls (meaning I hated them when they were popular and I love them now).  I don’t care how cheesy the music is or how awful their music videos are (“Backstreet’s Back,” anybody?), I can’t help but smile whenever these songs start to play.  And since these tunes influenced so many of my stories in high school, they will always have a soft spot in my heart.

How about you – what are your guilty pleasures?

Fourteen

Yesterday I took a day off from most social media, with the exception of a Facebook post (I heart The Princess Bride!) and a couple of Twitter updates.  Partly I was trying to get caught up on what I’d missed Friday and Saturday, but mostly I was spending a lovely rainy day with family.  I had a productive day, even if it wasn’t exactly productive in all the ways I had hoped it would be.

But!  That was yesterday, not when I was fourteen.  That’s the age we’re up to, as I recall.  Fourteen, what a year.  I was still living with my aunt the first part of that year, but that fall I started high school.  Once again I’d gone from the top of the heap to the bottom of the totem pole.  But with an awesome circle of friends, I was sure it would be a fantastic four years.

Suddenly I’m reminded of those old Iowa State commercials, the ones that asked what you wanted to do with your four years.  Or maybe they asked how you wanted to spend them.  That might have been it.  Tomcat and I saw one once when he was four and he looked up at me and said, “Mommy, I want my four years to last forever so I can stay your little boy.”

But, as usual, I digress.
