Once upon a time, I was quite adept at climbing trees. This tree was at my grandparents’ house and did a fantastic job of shading their driveway. I remember, quite vividly, perching in one of its many crotches and writing my first poem (a copy of which I still have somewhere in my office).
When Bubbles was born, I was disappointed that we didn’t have any good climbing trees in our yard. Then I moved to town, and each new place also lacked good climbing trees. At last we have a place with lots of trees for the kids to climb, and they’ve taken to it like ducks to water (the older ones, anyway). To me, there’s nothing quite like climbing a tree for fun and adventure.
Don’t forget to stop by Charnele’s blog and take a gander at her throwback post!
Did you climb trees when you were a kid? Do you let your kids climb them?

Sometimes as a kid I’d come home to a locked door and would climb this huge tree in our backyard to get into the house through the second floor window (the only window that could be opened from the outside.) Pretty risky now that I think about it! I was never a very good climber.

We had a birch tree in our front yard that my sister and I used to climb as kids. It was as tall as our house, and we regularly climbed up as high as the second-story window. Our mom was terrified we’d fall and break our necks, but we never did. We were pretty good climbers, especially considering that we only had one other tree in our yard we could climb. My dad had a thing for trees, so we practically had a forest for a yard by the time I was in high school, but there just weren’t enough good branches to make them worth climbing.

I used to climb. My kids have climbed a little, but yeah, we need to get them to more trees!

Bubbles spent half the summer in the tree just outside our back door, and he’s climbed at least one of our apple trees a few times, too. Miss Tadpole doesn’t seem to care as much about climbing trees, but I think Cricket and Thumper are eager to have a try. They just have to grow a little more first. 🙂
I really kind of miss climbing trees. But I’m not nearly fit enough for it anymore. I should work on that.

Cue 1980’s movie training montage, where you are at first climbing and falling out of trees, getting frustrated, then by the end you climb like a really high tree and just pump your fist.
Make it happen. Actually, it already just happened in words 🙂

Gotta love a good ’80s training montage. I’m thinking something from the Daniel LaRusso school of training… 😀

Yes. A lot. We had a 60ft birch in our garden. I’d climb to the top. Now, many od trees there, mincluding the birch, have caught honey fungus and died so I was lucky. I hope mc mini will climb rptrees. I will certainly let him.

I’m thrilled that my kids have taken to the trees. I hope McMini enjoys climbing! 🙂
