Since I had a lovely long weekend, I managed to hammer out a whole chapter in a mere afternoon. The words were flowing like the rain on Sunday and it was awesome! If only that happened every time I sat down to write. *sigh*
So, since I’ve moved on to Chapter 9 now, here’s a snippet of Chapter 8:
The forest was darker than Henry remembered. Sure, it was rainy now and then it had been a beautiful sunshiny day, but he had a feeling that this darkness had nothing at all to do with the weather. Something else was amiss, though, and for a moment, he couldn’t quite put his finger on what. But as he moved cautiously through the trees, eyes and ears alert for possible signs of danger, he finally realized what was bothering him.
It was quiet. Too quiet.
I’m really having fun writing a sequel, but it’s challenging in a lot of ways, too. I try to incorporate a bit of the first book – references to earlier people and events, for instance – but I don’t want to give away too much. On the other hand, I don’t want to be so vague that I confuse readers. It’s a fine line to walk. I hope I’m walking it well. I guess we’ll see once I’m done, won’t we?

Suddenly they all died. The end. 
That’s the hard part (for me) about writing sequels. I want to give some away, but not enough so they don’t have to read what came before.

That’s exactly the trouble I’m having. Hopefully my sequel experiment doesn’t blow up in my face. But then, I suppose that’s what revisions are for, eh? 🙂

My usual model is: have I given them enough to want to read it, but not revealed enough that they don’t have to.

That’s what I’ve been striving for. I’ve made a couple of changes as a result, but I’m trying not to edit too much as I go along. It’s one of my faults, so I’m trying to see how it goes just writing it all out first and editing later. I’m struggling with that part the most. 🙂

I’ve tried that but as much as I try not to I have to edit as I go. It’s pretty much pointless as my story keeps changing but I can’t help it.

I can’t help it, either. I write longhand and type things up as I go, which results in a bit of editing as I type. But I’m trying not to edit too much as I type, which is something I’m prone to. It’s driving me bonkers, but I am getting more written faster, so I guess the end result is a win?

Whatever works for us is best. Today I did ten pages toady of Kongomato 2. I probably could have done more had I not edited as I went.

I got about half a page written on my lunch break. If I hadn’t been texting my sister about the demise of Hostess and the inevitable disappearance of their beloved fruit pies, I probably could have gotten more written. Perhaps tonight…

Hostess, fruit pies?

Hostess was a baked goods company that produced a wide variety of things, from Twinkies to Wonder Bread. Their fruit pies were my favorite and, in my opinion, the only ones worth eating (unless, of course, you were eating one that’s homemade which are, of course, infinitely better).

I’m not allowed to eat sugery stuff. According to my doctor, she’s never seen a cholesterol level that high in a living person.

Their raspberry Zingers were good, too. I don’t eat a lot of that stuff, but every now and then it’s nice to have a little treat. Little Debbie is their biggest competitor (at least in my part of the country) and I generally prefer their snacks to Hostess. But there are some things that Little Debbie just doesn’t make.
One of my friends pointed out on Facebook yesterday that liquidation means Hostess’s recipes will likely be up for grabs, so their products may not completely disappear. That might be true for icons like Twinkies, but I remain unconvinced about a bright future for my beloved fruit pies.
