Seymour’s cousin came over Saturday night so that we could go out on a date.  It was utterly fantastic!

She stayed the night and had breakfast with us Sunday morning.  Happy fun family times!

Look at the beauty I found in my mailbox today:

I love getting mail that isn’t a bill. It’s such a shame that people don’t write letters the way they used to – there’s just something about a handwritten letter or postcard or what have you that lets the recipient know the sender really cares. I mean, how many emails and text messages do we dash off without really thinking about them? They’re quick and easy to send.

But a handwritten letter requires much more thought and effort, and the results are definitely worth it. It’s like Hallmark’s old slogan, When you care enough to send the very best. Anyone can type up a quick note. But a well-written and legible letter is something of a dying art.

I’d like to thank my friend, Alisa Sibrova, for this wonderful postcard. Las Vegas is a fun place, and one I wouldn’t mind visiting again someday. 🙂

Cricket likes to take toys to daycare.  “I have to share my toys at daycare, Mommy,” he tells me when I ask why he’s leaving the house with his pockets packed with toy cars.

I like him (and Thumper, and Bubbles in his younger days) to leave his toys at home, where they won’t get lost.  At least if they get lost at home, we stand a chance of seeing them again – not usually the case at daycare, and he’s lost several of his cars this way.

So we’ve reached a compromise: He can bring his toys with him, but they have to stay in the car, where they won’t get lost (permanently).  As a result, Thumper has become not only become Cricket’s bedtime defender, but also his carseat warmer.  He took his time this morning making sure that Thumper was in just the right position to keep his spot warm all day long.

And it worked, too – it was so hot in the car when I got off work tonight that my seat was warm! 😀

My boys love their kitties:

Sometimes, though, they love them a little too much. A couple minutes after I took this, Socks managed to free herself from Cricket’s grasp.

Still, she fared better than Bubbles did today. But that’s a story for tomorrow’s post.

Today marks the first day of the new school year, and it’s already been a bit wild.

image

Between cleaning up after some naughty kitties, tracking down those last few supplies, and chasing little brothers around, it’s been rather hectic. But it’s good to be back in a routine, too.

Here’s to another great year! 🙂

So you know how I said the other day that if there was a better fragrance than fresh-cut grass and fresh apples I didn’t know it? I was wrong.

The one scent that’s better than those is the smell of applesauce cooking on the stove (and simmering in the crock pot, because I made two batches). I took a few chunks out of my thumb and I’ve been on my feet working with apples for the last ten hours or so, but judging by what I was able to taste (which was admittedly little because I burned the tar out of my tongue), it was all worth it. 🙂

I woke up to the devastating news that we’ve lost yet another cat.

Calico

This time it wasn’t one of the kittens, but Mrs. Calico herself.  A great mama and a fantastic mouser, Calico was one of the sweetest kitties I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.  She was apparently out hunting last night or early this morning when someone ran over her near our driveway.

I didn’t say anything to the kids this morning, but they’re going to be terribly upset tonight when they find out.  This makes six cats we’ve lost since May (unnamed kitten, Oscar, Freckles, Minnie, Katniss, and Calico all died; it’s seven if you count Patches, who went to a new home), and I don’t think I can take any more of this.

I really hope the boys didn’t let Shadow out this morning, because I’m afraid we might not see him again if they did.  He’s very shy and likes to hide – last time we let him out, he ended up stuck in the garage overnight because we couldn’t find him.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Calico, and take care of your babies in heaven.

I spent this afternoon collecting apples while Seymour mowed lawn.

If anything smells better than fresh cut grass and fresh apples, I don’t know what it is.

Here’s Seymour giving Miss Tadpole a few pointers on mini-golf:
