I woke up to the devastating news that we’ve lost yet another cat.
This time it wasn’t one of the kittens, but Mrs. Calico herself. A great mama and a fantastic mouser, Calico was one of the sweetest kitties I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. She was apparently out hunting last night or early this morning when someone ran over her near our driveway.
I didn’t say anything to the kids this morning, but they’re going to be terribly upset tonight when they find out. This makes six cats we’ve lost since May (unnamed kitten, Oscar, Freckles, Minnie, Katniss, and Calico all died; it’s seven if you count Patches, who went to a new home), and I don’t think I can take any more of this.
I really hope the boys didn’t let Shadow out this morning, because I’m afraid we might not see him again if they did. He’s very shy and likes to hide – last time we let him out, he ended up stuck in the garage overnight because we couldn’t find him.
Rest in peace, Mrs. Calico, and take care of your babies in heaven.

I’m very sorry for your family’s loss. She was a very beautiful cat.

Thanks. She really was. We’ll miss her a lot.

What a pity, but I bet she had a good home with you.

She did. I think the only thing she’d have liked more is if we’d have let her be an inside cat (Seymour’s horrendous allergies prevented that).

I’ve just ejected a dead rat from my garden, courtesy of Harley, our Bengal. If my screaming wife had anything to do with it you’d have another cat right now.

I’m so sorry, Kay. That’s terrible news. We’ve lost cats over the years and now I’ve become obsessive about keeping them indoors. My husband thinks I’m crazy and that they should be allowed outside to do cat things, but we live close to the freeway and a construction zone. Too many dangers for kitties. My heart goes out to you. ❤

Thanks Tricia. I wish we could keep ours indoors – then we wouldn’t have lost so many. But Seymour is so horribly allergic that it just doesn’t work for him (we tried once, shortly after we were married). I’ve lost cats before, too, but I think the fact that we’ve lost so many so close together this summer is what’s got me so much more upset than normal.
