Photo Friday: Seasons change

fallfieldSummer is a thing of the past, that’s for sure.  Though fall officially started nearly two weeks ago, it hasn’t yet felt truly fall-like outside.

That all changed this morning, when I awoke to wind gusts that were approaching 40 mph.  I know the saying is all about March coming in like a lion, but I think it’s true of October, too, especially today.

Anyway, the green fields of corn have been slowly turning to gold of late, and I must admit, the sight always quickens my blood.  I love fall. 🙂

I hope October’s been treating you right so far!  I can’t wait to see what the rest of the month will bring.  In the meantime, don’t forget to stop by Charnele’s blog to read all about the seasons (or lack thereof) in Jamaica!

What’s your favorite season?

One of the things we did over the weekend to sort of celebrate our anniversary involved attending a football game at the University of Northern Iowa. It was my first time tailgating, and I had a lot of fun (despite the swarms of little black bugs).

Nothing says fun like a game of catch with the old man.

And the Panthers? They stomped the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles 50-7. Those seven points were scored late in the third quarter against the Panthers’ third string. It was a blowout.

I didn’t even know I took this picture:

square accident

Apparently I’m an accidental photographer instead of an accidental texter.  I kind of like it, though.  My phone’s screen is hard to see in bright sunshine, and I thought I had it locked, but evidently not.

Have you ever taken an accidental photo?

Last week, the Daily Post ran a photo challenge about endurance.  This is what endurance means to me:

centuryfarm

There are a lot of century farms in Iowa, farms that have been owned by one family for a hundred years or more, including mine.  They have a recognition ceremony at the state fair every year, and it’s a really neat thing to be a part of.

Since apparently my cloudy commute pictures are depressing some folks, here’s one from the other morning, when the sun was shining in one corner of the sky:

I love how the light saturates the field with color, making the crops pop against the clouds darkening the distant sky. 🙂

This morning started off with a beautifully colored sky, even if it did look like it was going to rain:

A couple miles further down the road, it did start to rain, and it kept it up most of the morning.  I’m glad the rain has stopped now, but I do wish it wasn’t so boringly gray outside.

Today started off dark and gloomy. But by noon, the clouds had parted.

Of course now the weather seems to think we’re back in July, because it was 80° all day. Still, it was a beautiful afternoon. 🙂

I had to go pick the kids up from Faith Formation (CCD for all you old-schoolers) last night and, as the sun is setting a little earlier each night now, I couldn’t help watching the western sky out my window as I drove north to church.

septembersunset

No, I didn’t take this while I was driving.  (If I had, it wouldn’t have turned out so well.)  I did take a couple others where the trees weren’t in the way, and they turned out just as nicely as these.

I love sunsets.  And fall.  I only wish the hint of green I could see in my rearview mirror would have shown up because the setting sun gave the clouds a faint rainbow appearance last night that was just magical.

Today was a beautiful, glorious day, the kind of day that makes you feel glad to be alive.

As I was wandering my yard this afternoon, I happened upon these beauties. I suspect these are the last tomatoes we’ll see this year (in our garden, anyway), but there are still a few apples clinging to a half-dead tree in the yard.

I love fall. 🙂
