Photo 365 #97: The natural world
Living in a rural area is nothing if not fantastic for capturing wonderful moments in the life cycle of nature. As evidenced by my deep and abiding love for skyscapes, I’ve got no shortage of inspiration for nature-based images. And since it’s hard for me to choose just one, here are several!
Beautiful…and treacherous.

These are only a handful of the nearly two thousand pictures I’ve taken of the world around me this year alone. I feel blessed to live in such a beautiful place.

One of the things I love about fall is the profusion of color. From fiery reds to golden oranges, color abounds.
I found these late blooms among the changing leaves at the courthouse today as I ran errands at work. I loved these flowers in the spring, when their golden yellow blooms were like little spots of sunshine on a cloudy day, and I couldn’t help thinking of them the same way today. As beautiful as they are in the spring, when they pop against the deep green of their leaves, they were just as beautiful today against the backdrop of green and gold.

Photo Friday: Outside Interests
Today’s Photo Friday theme is all about the great outdoors. If you keep tabs on my Instagram widget in the sidebar on the right, you’ll see that I take lots and lots of pictures of flowers. Like, seriously, a ton. I may not be able to grow flowers worth a hoot, but I sure can take nice pictures of them.

So today’s Photo Friday theme is inside. But inside what? Well, how about inside the universe? No? Okay, then feast your eyes on the inside of this pretty, pretty flower:
We have this bush in our yard that looks a lot like a lilac bush but, as far as I can tell, it’s not a lilac bush. It smells glorious, though, and when it was blooming a couple weeks back, I had to snap a few quick pictures. This fly sure was happy that night. 🙂

Photo Friday again already?
So…how did that happen? Wasn’t it just Monday yesterday? Not that I’m complaining, mind you, it’s just that I’m now left wondering what in the world happened to the month of May. It was just May Day last week, right?
Right? No? Okay, fine.
Well, today’s theme is movement. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know I’ve been spending quite a bit of time out in my yard taking pictures of all the pretty things sprouting up from the ground. We’ve had quite a lot of wind lately, too, so getting those great shots has been something of a challenge.
Yesterday, though, I headed out across the driveway and got down in the dirt to get a shot of the pretty green shoots coming up in the neighboring field. I’ve been wanting to do this for a week or so, but I just haven’t made the time for it. Until yesterday, that is, while the boys were occupied with the cat.
It’s the little things. 🙂
Of all the shots I took yesterday morning, this one is probably my favorite, and features tiny little corn stalks waving in the wind.

Photo Friday: Change is in the air!
Today’s Photo Friday theme is change. What with moving and attempting to downsize, I’ve got plenty of change happening in my life at the moment, but I chose to ignore all of that today and instead focus on the changes happening around me. In the space of a month, the life-giving rain has taken us from scenes of death and decay to the blossoms of youth, and it’s a change I relish every year.

The change is amazing

Water, water, everywhere…

If you follow me anywhere else online, you’ll have seen by now the various flood pictures I’ve been sharing (seriously, much like the water, they’re all over – both my personal and public Facebook accounts, Flickr, Instagram, and soon Pinterest as well). Despite that, I’m going to post some more here anyway. The extent of the damage won’t likely be truly realized for a long time yet, and the recovery will probably take years if this turns out to be anything like previous floods have been.
I know I’ve mentioned the Flood of ’93 several times already, but we had another major flood just five years ago that I had forgotten about until a friend mentioned it on Facebook. I mean, I didn’t really forget, but I had forgotten that some of the severe flooding had been so close to us. All you seemed to hear about was what happened in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, but there was plenty of severe flooding in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area, too, and I had forgotten that. I think the reason that ’93 is stuck in my head has to do with my mom; seeing all the photos she took of the local damage really imprinted the severity of the disaster on my tender little psyche. The flooding in 2008, while devastating, just didn’t have the same personal connection for me that the floods of ’93 and ’13 have.
Anyway, we drove through quite a bity of flooding again on Monday as we tried to get home.
Where’s an ark when you need one?
I shot this picture of a submerged field through the window of our truck as we were heading down to visit Seymour’s parents for the weekend. The rain bands on the window blurred the image and gave it the neat effect; the only processing I did to this was adding Instagram’s Lo-Fi filter to make the blue of the water pop out a little more. Even without it, the grass still glowed that green.
Suddenly they all died. The end.
