Only in Iowa can it be 80° one day and snowing the next. While it wasn’t 80° where I was yesterday, it was in other parts of the state, according to two of my friends down in southern Iowa. And rumor has it that the temperature dropped 40 degrees in four hours. That’s pretty quick!
So, to recap: The weekend and the first part of the week were sunny, warm, and absolutely gorgeous, leaving us all thinking that winter skipped spring altogether and decided that summer should just follow directly this year. But now Winter, she’s a-back. With a vengeance.
Me no likey.
I took all these – and a few others – over the course of the morning. When I left home, it was dry – no precipitation whatsoever, though it had been raining earlier in the morning. When I dropped the kids off at school, it was starting to sprinkle. A few minutes later, it was raining. Within about ten or fifteen minutes after the rain started, it changed to sleet. (It should also be noted that I was driving west this whole time, or smack into the oncoming storm system.) And shortly after that, the sleet changed into snow, leaving the roads a slippery, slushy mess.
When I arrived at work, my coworker told me I was a brave girl. My first thought: Why? Because I came to work? What’s so brave about that? Then I asked her how long it had been snowing and she told me it had already been at it for two and a half hours. Several area schools were cancelled for the day and a half hour northwest of town, there were reports of six inches already on the ground. The radio reports are calling for five to nine inches before the day is over and I’m sure we’ve got at least five already.
I thought this was May? Where is spring? Hello, Mother Nature? Haven’t you heard that old nursery rhyme? It goes like this:
April showers bring May flowers
And May flowers bring the Pilgrims.
See? May flowers, not May snow storms. Of course, Captain Picard said it better:
And on that note, I think my work here is done. Happy Thursday, folks!

It’s just as odd over here in the UK I’m afraid! I think Mother Nature is getting her own back on the battering we’ve given her over the centuries! Nice post 🙂

I think you may be right about that! I’ve heard of snowstorms even later in May than this, but still – after the lovely weather we’ve been having, it’s hard to feel Winter’s icy grip once more. Here’s hoping it won’t last long for either of us! 😀

We’re down in the 40’s today, with the 30’s predicted for tonight. That’s really weird for Texas. Be careful in the snow!

It’s still snowing to beat the band, so we must be hovering right around the freezing mark. It was 35 when I left for work this morning and I don’t think it was supposed to get a whole lot warmer than that; at least next week looks springier! 🙂

I guess I should stop complaining about our weather here in Virginia. We’ve had some odd fluctuations this spring but haven’t seen snow since March and fingers crossed, I think I can finally pack up my winter jacket.

Oh, you are lucky! Actually, though, I think this is the first snow we’ve seen since March, too. We’ve had lots of rain and the usual odd temperature fluctuations, but the snow is by far the weirdest. I hope it won’t last.
On the bright side, maybe this year there will be some water in the river when we try to go tubing…Last year we spent the better part of our trip scraping our butts on the rocks at the bottom. We can’t do that this year because we bought one of those raft-type deals and then it would be ruined, so hopefully all the rain we had last month and all the snow we got over the winter will help in that regard.
Look on the bright side, right? 😀

I’m so happy to discover your blog, Kay. Although I am now living in my native Los Angeles near the beach I can definitely relate. I lived in France for nearly 30 years and London so I have a healthy appreciation for the seasons. Although on a day like today in the mid 80’s there are many mornings when I have to say, “London, I love you and I am so glad that I am not waking up to freezing rain!”

Oh, freezing rain, how I loathe thee! I have a good friend who lives out in L.A. and I’ll bet on days like today, she says the same thing. She grew up here and doesn’t miss the winter weather, either. Still, it must be odd not to mark the year by the change in seasons…As much as I grouse about winter (okay, and summer), I’m not sure I could live in a place where the weather wasn’t part of people’s dialogue. That would be a culture shock for me. 🙂

I’ll stick with London, for this week at least. It’s been great, but will probably constitute our summer.

My boss had eleven and a half inches in one place in his back yard (and eight and a half in another place). Luckily, it’s all gone now and it’s once again warm enough to go out without a coat. I think it’s supposed to hit 70 tomorrow. 🙂

Thanks. Rub it in why dontcha? I haven’t polished my bike for a few days, so it should be fine.

So I shouldn’t tell you that it was so warm today that my kids put on their swimsuits and ran through the sprinkler? 😛 Honestly, only in Iowa can it be 80 degrees one day and snowing the next. And then shortly after, back to 80 again. The weather here this spring has been downright psychotic.

I don’t blame you. It’s been nice here the last couple of days, but I’ve been heading off to work armed with a jacket at least and sometimes my winter coat. 😉

Yep. I was ready. Force eight winds and plenty of rain.
We had almost a whole day of nice weather. I suppose I shouldn’t expect any more.

Probably not. It’s cooled off again now, and all the rain we’ve had crumbled our front steps at home. I’m beginning to tire of it, really.
