Photo Friday throwback continues!

My brain seems to be out of the office today, so my throwback post isn’t going back all that far:

Here’s Bubbles fighting with some landscape edging last spring.  He and Seymour were prettying up the front yard at our old house, and he had a little bit of trouble.

Don’t forget to stop by Charnele’s blog and see what she’s been up to lately.  Hope your Friday’s a happy one, and have a great weekend!

Kids are only kids once.  Here are some of my favorite kid-related stories and things I will miss about them as they get older.

misstMiss Tadpole

Several years ago, we were down at Seymour’s parents’ house helping set up for a garage sale.  Bubbles and Miss T. were in the house watching The Lion King while I fixed dinner and Seymour and his ma were out in the garage.  As I was serving the kids, they asked me if I’d seen the movie before.  I said, “Yep.  This movie came out when I was a kid.”

Miss Tadpole: “Wow, that’s an old movie.”
Bubbles: “Yeah, really old.”
Miss Tadpole: “So…why is it in color?”
Me: “What?”
Miss Tadpole: “Well, I thought old movies were…

Photo Friday returns!

I had actually planned for Photo Fridays to return last week, but since last Friday was my first day back to work and generally insane, I decided to push it back a week.

This week’s Photo Friday post (and next week’s, and probably at least the week after that) is a throwback.  You know, like Throwback Thursday, but on Friday.  I have a huge archive of old photos, and I thought it would be fun to share a few.

This one, clearly, is from 2010.  We traveled south to see Seymour’s cousin get hitched, and as always, had a heck of a great time.  Her wedding was the day before our first wedding anniversary, so we made a fun weekend of it.

Don’t Bubbles and Miss Tadpole look little?  It’s hard to believe how much they’ve grown in the last four and a half years.

Have a great weekend, everybody, and don’t forget to check out Charnele’s blog to see what she’s got going on!

I love my boys.  I love that they get along so much better than my sister and I did when we were little.  Cricket and Thumper are best friends, and it’s wonderful.

brothers

That said, they’re also three and four (read: they don’t always share well).  So when they were playing nicely together the other morning (i.e., sharing) while watching Dungeons and Dragons, I had to take a picture.  Lately there’s been too much fighting over who has whose toy car, and I relished the morning’s relative peace.

I know I’ll miss this stage one day, and I hope they can stay best friends as they get older.

spidermanCricket loves his new jammies.  He’s hit the superhero worship phase, and he loves the same heroes his big brother used to love.

I was impressed I managed to get him to sit still long enough for a good picture, and even more impressed that I managed to catch this lovely smile.  They come and go as quickly as Thumper does. 🙂

toogrownupYesterday we traveled south to celebrate Christmas with Seymour’s family.  Normally they come up to our place for Christmas, but it just didn’t work out this year (darn work schedules, anyway).  We had a lovely time, full of great food and lots of togetherness.

One of the things Miss Tadpole received from Grandpa and Grandma was the rockin’ purple hat she’s wearing in this picture.  She then spent a good hour or so arranging her hair and playing around with her hat.  I got a couple of pictures of her, and this is one of my favorites.

However, she looks so grown up!  I’m not sure I’m ready for this yet.

I couldn’t help smiling a bit, though, at my reaction to this picture.  All I could think of was the scene in the movie Blended where Adam Sandler’s newly-made-over daughter enters the dining room and the first thing that pops into his head is, “It’s the end of the world as we know it…”

And for the record, those are my shoes.  How she managed not to break her neck in them since they’re three sizes too big, I’ll never know.

sleepytadpoletinytadpoleToday Miss Tadpole turns twelve.

Twelve!  Can you believe it?  I know I can’t.  I’m sure Seymour can’t, either.  After all, she’s his first-born, his little girl.

The picture on the left is from Thanksgiving, when we were all so exhausted on the way home from Grandpa and Grandma’s house that the kids fell asleep and the grown-ups would have liked to.  She’s so big!

The picture on the right is from the year Seymour and I moved in together.  It was the first year we took the kids to Miracle on Main together, and I don’t know what she told Santa, but it was apparently pretty darn funny.  She’s so leetle!

I can’t believe how fast all our kids have grown – before I know it, they’ll be out of the house and I won’t know what to do with myself.  I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet.

P.S. I know I missed yesterday’s Photo Friday post, but with the holidays and the birthday and everything else that’s going on at the moment, I think I’m going to take a break from Photo Friday for the rest of the month.  But don’t worry – Photo Friday will return in 2015!

I can’t believe I missed this yesterday, but since I did, I guess I’ll post it today.

See, yesterday was my dad’s birthday.  He’d have been 80.  I really miss him, especially at this time of year.  Four years ago at Christmas, we told him he’d have to wait six months for his Christmas gift – a new grandson.  But he only made it three months before he passed away, so he never got to know the boys.  But he doted on Bubbles.

Bubbles was named for my dad, and he always said he had to stick around to corrupt him.  He couldn’t wait till Bubbles got big enough to teach him all about hobos and trains and girls and whatever other things he could think of to pass along (like incriminating stories of me, most likely).  I wish the boys could have known him, too – he’d have gotten such a kick out of them: Cricket is so matter-of-fact that it’s hilarious, and Thumper is a regular chip off the ol’ block.

Fun family memories are right this way…

Abdominal surgery is the pits. Recovery means relaxing and taking it easy, but those are both easier said than done when you have two toddlers running around the house at mach 10. Luckily, Miss Tadpole and Bubbles have been wonderful helpers. They’ve been Toddler Distractors and Chefs Supreme, and Miss Tadpole was even a Baby Shower Ambassador this morning.

Last night, she fixed supper by herself for the first time. Bubbles fixed dinner, a frozen pizza, but Miss Tadpole fixed up a pan of Hamburger Helper. I sat in the kitchen and supervised, and everything came out wonderfully. That’s the best-tasting Hamburger Helper I’ve had in quite a while, as a matter of fact.

I hope I’m feeling better soon so that the kids can return to being kids. But in the meantime, I am unbelievably proud of the way they’ve stepped up to help out while I’m recovering. 🙂

How do your kids make you proud?
