Outlining, synopsis-style

He crossed the room slowly as the unseen hand of his tutor banged on the door again. The knocking had a tone and texture all its own, not unlike a voice. It was at once demanding, frustrated, and annoyed, as if the person knocking would much rather be somewhere, anywhere, else. Michael had never noticed such a thing in a knock before; he wondered what else he’d missed as he had sailed through life trying to engage fully with a half dozen different things all at once.

-The Lokana Chronicles: Fog of War

I’ve been working on my story again. It’s been a while, though, and I’ve lost touch with what I’d written before, so I’m rereading it and creating a synopsis so that I have something to look back at any time I need a bit of a refresher. The quote above is from Chapter 7.

Of course, the problem is…

Happy picture fun times!

It’s a gorgeous sunny day today.  It’s so beautiful, in fact, that during a particularly good song on the radio, I randomly started chair dancing at my desk.  So in honor of the brilliant day and my good mood (which I doubted would exist the way my morning started), here are some pictures that make me happy.   Please to enjoy…behind the cut.

Ich bin ein liebster!

Hiya!  I know it’s been a few days, but after all those haiku I posted last month, I needed a bit of a break.  Also, I’ve been fighting off a migraine for the last few days, so my time doing much of anything productive has been pretty limited.  But now I’m back, more exhausted than ever, and ready to…uh…well, maybe not wow you, exactly, but hopefully keep you entertained with my stunning ability to trip over flat surfaces.

That should do nicely, yes?

No?  What do you mean, no?

What do you mean, you want substance?  Why on Earth are you here, then?  Wait!  Don’t leave me!

Okay, that was a little pathetic.  Well, if it’s substance you want instead of slapstick, how about this?  I was nominated for the Liebster Award earlier today by the lovely G. Edward Smith.  He’s got a very nice blog and it’s well worth checking out.

As usual, we’ve got some rules for this puppy. They be as follows (and you know you want to follow, right? Right!):

May Day!

Can you believe it’s May already?  What the heck happened to April?  And didn’t we just have Christmas last week?  Where is the time going?

Well, I intended this post to be a sort of recap.  See, not only did I do the National Poetry Month challenge last month, I also participated in the Ultimate Blog Challenge.  I signed up for it at the last minute after reading about it on my friend Kina’s blog and, while I mostly forgot to use the Twitter hashtag and tweet my posts, I at least remembered to post them in the Facebook group and visit the other participants’ sites.  There were tons of amazing posts written in April and I’m glad I joined in this challenge.  Maybe I’ll even sign up for the next one! 🙂

I was going to do a little more in-depth post today, but I’m a little bit sleep deprived after staying up to watch three hours’ worth of Dancing with the Stars last night so I could see who went home.  Sleep deprivation has been a recurring theme for me the last couple of weeks, and not because the kids aren’t sleeping (they are).  Okay, time to go take a nap or something so I can make some semblance of sense tomorrow.  Maybe.

Happy May, everybody!

Presenting Will Macmillan Jones, Comedy Goon and Author Extraordinaire!

Will's PhotographWith me today is Will Macmillan Jones, author of The Banned Underground series (and the Alliance of Worldbuilders’ resident Comedy Goon, as noted above).  He was kind enough to answer a few questions for me, though without the aid of the Spanish Inquisition (and I’d so been looking forward to calling them up – no one expects the Spanish Inquisition! :D).

Tell us about yourself.
My bio will tell you that I’m a fifty-something lover of blues, rock, and jazz, and have (sadly) spent much of my time working as an accountant.  Some of my friends suspect that I’m a covert adrenaline junkie as well, having crashed hang gliders, done a little sailing (didn’t like capsizing), fallen over on the way up several hills and crashed the odd motorbike, and put various cars into ditches.  Er, there seems to be a bit of a pattern forming there. . .

Have you always been interested in writing, or is it a recently developed passion?
I’ve always loved reading, ever since I was a small child.  My father was a primary school teacher and read to me every night from a young age, something I’ve done with my own kids, too.  It’s brilliant fun!  So when at grammar school I was encouraged to write, I loved it.  But then it took a back seat for many years, until I discovered you could get a minor flesh wound from a pen instead of crashing into things, and I haven’t looked back since.

Can you tell us a little about some of your other writing projects?  Are they all fantasy, or do you write in more than one genre?
As well as the fantasy, I also write some paranormal books, on the edge of horror.  The first of these has been very well received indeed, and so I’ve a sequel in the works.  There’s also a children’s fantasy and a YA fantasy coming along.  I think I stay pretty much round worlds of pure imagination, because it’s so satisfying to create something that can be made to feel real.

Wanna know what inspired the series, why the baddies are accountants, or where the Banned will head next? The conversation continues behind the cut!

Exciting things are heading this way!

Don’t forget to stop back next week to have some fun with the Banned Underground and their fabulous author, Will Macmillan Jones.  Pizza and cake will be provided, and punch if I can find my recipe (alas, no beer, as I’ve let my liquor license lapse).  But with Fungus and the gang, there’s bound to be some fun ahead, so drop on by and let the good times roll! 🙂

Easter clean-up

Okay, so I didn’t get this posted yesterday. I did, however, get three others drafted and ready to go for next week (still have some others to put together yet). I know, I know. But it is Easter weekend, and we have company today. Why am I writing this now, then? Because I’m in the backseat of my car on the way to a family gathering that’s two hours from home and I can’t hear the conversation happening in the front seat well enough to take part.

In other news, I’m hanging out with fellow author Mary Fan over at her blog today and talking about writing process. She’s a wonderful host and you should all check out her site. You can find my post here.

So! What are all these mysterious and entertaining posts I’ve been promising? My good friend, Will, is out on tour at the moment, and will be stopping by next week. I’m sprucing up the place in case he brings his friends, the Banned Underground, along with him (which means I’ll be stocking up on pizza and beer and reinforcing anything that might be prone to shattering as a result of feedback). For a full list of tour dates, check out his publisher’s page here.

Also, tomorrow is April Fool’s Day. Since April is National Poetry Month, I think I’ll take it upon myself once again to try writing a poem a day. I’ve done it before and really enjoyed it, so why not? This serves as your warning: Prepare to be inundated with bad poetry. 🙂

And now I think I’ll leave you to it. I hope you all have a very happy Easter!

Sunday Sunday Sunday!

So this weekend I wanted to get a bunch of different writing projects squared away between a surprise party and visiting family.  No problem, right?  Wrong!  Well, I got one of them taken care of, anyway, but a visiting headache kept me from the others.  Our weekends are always so busy, it seems, yet they’re the only time I really have a chance to get caught up on things at home.  So this morning is going to be catch-up time till the family arrives.

In the meantime, I acquired a shiny new DSLR a while back and have been having loads of fun with it.  For your viewing pleasure until I return with a post of more substance, behold, the things with which I’ve been filling my weekend: behind the cut!
