Today’s Writing 101 task (okay, fine, it’s really Thursday’s task) is to grab the nearest book, turn to page 29, and use the first word that jumps off the page at you to inspire your post. I grabbed Land of Midnight Days by Katrina Jack and the first word to really jump out at me was the word parapet. With that in mind, here is my letter to a parapet:
Dear Parapet…
So for the Writing 101 Day Ten post, I’m supposed to write about my favorite food, and do it in my own voice. But everything I write is in my own voice, so what does that even mean? I mean, I have different voices, obviously – there’s the voice I use with my kids, the voice I use with my kids when they’re in trouble, the voice I use when I’m talking to other adults, the voice I write novels in (and that changes depending on the story), the voice I write blog posts in, the voice I write my diary in…
I guess I’m just going to have to pick one, aren’t I? 😀
Alrighty, then. I have about as many favorite foods as I have voices (apparently I have a lot of those), but the one that immediately comes to mind is pork chops and rice. I usually replace the pork chops with chicken breasts, though, which is also fantastic (maybe even better than the pork chops), and my dad would often substitute steaks. My mom used to make this dish, and I adored it. Couldn’t get enough.
But the rice is the best part. The recipe:

I’ve been fighting a sinus infection, an ear infection, and recovering from back-to-back Christmas parties with a cookie walk thrown in for good measure. I baked 23 dozen Christmas cookies in a span of 24 hours. I hope to be back to my normal self (both blogging and otherwise) soon, thanks to massive antibiotics (seriously, the things are horse pills!) and a(nother) good night’s sleep. Oh, good Lord, am I ever tired. I blame the stupid cold I’ve been fighting for a week in combination with four days of holiday merrymaking, followed by a return to work this morning (although really, work feels like a vacation compared to the thought of staying home with two energetic toddlers the way I feel right now). This unending crud has me feeling all sorts of fuzzy, impairing my ability to write but not dulling my desire.
Talk about frustration.
On the bright side, it’s snowing on my blog again. 😀
Anyway, with all that in mind (and an apparently busy week ahead of me), I don’t know how often I’ll be posting over the next couple of weeks. I’ll try and pop in every couple of days, but right now, I think I need to focus on getting better and getting ready for Christmas. I hope to see you all again soon! 😀

A woman in my childhood church used to travel to Russia quite a lot back in the late ’80s and early ’90s, and when she came back, she would give talks on her travels. She sparked my interest in this country (and a variety of other things, too), so I thought, why not? And this was my result:

Another week has come and gone and with it, another month as well. This past week seemed to drag by – there was more than once that I could have sworn that time really was standing still. But at last it’s the weekend! So what does that mean?
It means that I’ll blink and it will be Monday.
There’s a NASCAR race in Newton today that Seymour is at with a friend, so there was much cleaning last night and this morning. Tomorrow is the annual family reunion, so tonight I’ll have much cooking to do. But right now? Right now, the boys are down for a nap and I have time to get some writing and/or editing done.
And what am I doing? I’m blogging because I’m too worn out for all the thinking that writing and editing involves. And I had something I wanted to post about, but now I can’t remember what it was. *sigh* Perhaps if I could get rid of this darn headache, I could remember more than just my name… 😀

Well, I haven’t gotten rid of the headache, but I did kill a couple hours reading stuff online and then a couple more hanging out with an old friend. Time to feed the kiddoes and have a little quiet time before the craziness of tomorrow! Have a great night, everybody! 🙂

Hi, everybody! Thank you all for stopping by. I know it’s been a bit quiet here lately and unfortunately, I think that trend may continue for a while longer. Between the upcoming holiday, my impending camping trips, the new job, recovering from Saturday’s successful garage sale, and something else that I’m not quite ready to discuss in detail (though I did vaguely mention it on Twitter yesterday), I’ve got a lot on my plate at the moment and something’s gotta give. Sadly, I think my writing is it.
So, I’ll try to pop in here as often as I can. I’ll try to do the same for Facebook, even though I know my presence there lately probably isn’t what it ought to be. And Twitter? I’m still searching for a mobile app to replace my beloved Tweetdeck. If anyone has any suggestions for apps they love, I’m all ears (though for the record, I’ve tried HootSuite and I just don’t like it as well). Let me know in the comments! Maybe then I’ll at least be able to keep up there.

So, it’s Friday. Woohoo! It’s been a week of big, exciting things around the country, and it’s been a week of big exciting things right here in my own backyard. It’s going to be a super busy weekend, too. So what am I doing to prepare?
I’M WRITING, Y’ALL!
I’ve been working on Remnants again the last couple of days, and it feels great, but I can’t get my inner editor to shut up, which is irritating. I have a buttload of revisions left to do on The Lokana Chronicles, but I really need a week or so of peace, quiet, and no internet to get them done. 🙂
Still, it feels wonderful to be enjoying my passions again. I’ve missed playing with my camera and visiting imaginary worlds and the people that populate them. And since I’m starting a new job next week, it’s nice that at least a little bit of the change going on in my life is change that I enjoy (not that I’m not excited about the new job – I totally am).
So for now, it’s back to writing. Big things are in the works and I need time to prepare. Have a great weekend, everybody!
