Just a boy and his cat

A funny thing happened on my way to bed last night…

Bubbles asked me casually if we could have another cat. One of his classmates was looking for a home for a kitten she’d found. Ours are outdoor cats (Seymour’s allergic), and you can almost never have too many of those when you live out in the country, so I said, “Sure – why not?”

A little while later he came up to me again. “They’re on their way, Mom.”

“Say what?”

It was late. I hadn’t expected said pretty little baby kitty to arrive till sometime the next day. Instead, he arrived just before 10:00 p.m. that night, accompanied by one quiet girl and her tired mama.

This adorable little ball of fluff is called Spitfire. Goodness knows how he came by the name, but Bubbles and I agree that it suits him. After all, he’s not shy about letting us know when he wants our attention (all the time) or when he’s upset that he’s no longer the center of attention (any time we’re not actively adoring him), but his little tiny baby kitty meows are just about the cutest thing I’ve heard in a while. And he’s so tiny! How can you not love something this tiny?

He’s like Baby Groot – too cute to handle! 😀

So tell me – are you a cat person, a dog person, or somewhere in between? Do you have any fur babies?

Things ’90s girls do at slumber parties

After some discussion, we decided we didn’t actually need to complete this task because we were there for most of our childhood funny stories. And oddly enough, Girl Talk played a part in one of them. 🙂

  1. Drink Clearly Canadian and Surge.
  2. Hit the mall.
  3. Blast the Backstreet Boys and the Spice Girls at top volume.
  4. Play Heartthrob and Girl Talk.
  5. Chill out with Little Nicky.

The corollary to all this, of course, is that we felt super, super old. Okay, I felt super, super old. But it was a heck of a lot of fun. 🙂

Too cute to handle

Girls’ night means there will be pictures. Girls’ night with my bestie means there will be much silliness.

But who knew girls’ night would mean there would be this much cuteness?

Oh, all right, I totally knew. 😀

How are you spending your Friday night?

Oh, the joys of life in the Hawkeye State…

In honor of the fact that it’s only 8:00 a.m. and already about as far from a stellar day as it’s possible to get, I thought I’d share a favorite joke of mine. If you’re a long-time reader (or even if you’re not), you may have seen this before, as I shared it some years ago. It’s one of those things that’s funny because it’s true, and I hope you enjoy it.

Dear Diary

August 12
We moved to our new home in Iowa. It is so beautiful here. The hills are so pretty. I can hardly wait to see snow covering them.

October 14
Iowa is the most beautiful place on Earth. The leaves are turned all the colors and shades of red and orange. Went for a ride through the beautiful woods and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on Earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.

November 11
Deer season will start soon. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it will snow soon. I love it here.

December 2
It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looks like…

Bouncy, trouncy, flouncy, pouncy fun, fun, fun, fun, fun

I spent some time yesterday organizing the zillion or so pictures I took in 2016 in preparation for compiling our annual family photo book. It was a complete pain in the butt because I don’t think I did anything with them at all last year, other than move pictures from my phone (which I used way more often than my Nikon last year) onto my computer into a file called “camera pix – need to sort.” It took me forever to get them all sorted, primarily because of this:

Because I am so easily amused, I spent probably a couple of hours trying to make a gif of said bouncy fun. But, my computer being the junkpile that it is, it didn’t want to cooperate. Photoshop kept freezing, and what I wanted to do was bigger than most of the online utilities I found would allow.

Stupid size limits, anyway.

I spent probably half of this morning fooling around with it some more and finally got what I wanted to do cut down to a reasonable size.

Now, to scamper off to dinner before I make some more. 😀 How are you spending your weekend?

Power up!

Did you know I have superpowers? I do! Really! 😀 They include, but are not limited to:

  • Telling bad jokes.
  • Recognizing actresses from one 30-second scene in a movie that came out 27 years ago in something new.
  • Having passable good grammar skills.
  • Knowing an impossible amount of random useless trivia.
  • Making my family laugh.

A while back, Seymour and I were discussing what our superpowers would be if we had them, which got me thinking about things I’ve done that a much younger me never ever even considered as life possibilities. We decided that my superpowers would involve bad jokes and grammar, and my new favorite joke was actually a product of this conversation:

Yes, yes, I know – they’re both groaners. But if I can’t let my nerd flag fly here, then where the heck can I?

How about you – what are your superpowers?

Another stressed-out Christmas carol

So last year about this time, I was doing the Writing 101 challenge and the prompt was fallacy. I wrote a stressed-out-Mom version of “Jingle Bells,” which pretty accurately reflected my state of mind for the duration of the holiday season last year.

Actually, it’s a pretty accurate reflection of my state of mind right now, too.

In a fit of inspiration this morning, I heard the words to another stressed-out-Mom carol, and the following was born:

It’s the Most Burdensome Time of the Year

It’s the most burdensome time of the year!
With the holiday shopping
And temperatures dropping, we’re living in fear,
It’s the most burdensome time of the year.

It’s the stress-stressfullest season of all.
With the social engagements and concert arrangements
I just want to bawl!
It’s the stress-stressfullest season of all…

Oh, the kitchen is smokin’
And my budget’s broken,
I think I’m becoming a loon.
Will the pipes keep on freezing,
The kids keep on sneezing,
Or will they be throwing up soon?

It’s the most burdensome time of the year!
The noise is astonishing,
With carols admonishing be of good cheer,
It’s the most burdensome time of the year!

Oh, the kitchen is smokin’
And my budget’s broken,
I think I’m becoming a loon.
Will the pipes keep on freezing,
The kids keep on sneezing,
Or will they be throwing up soon?

It’s the most burdensome time of the year!
The noise is astonishing,
With carols admonishing be of good cheer,
It’s the most burdensome time,
Yes, the most burdensome time,
Oh, the most burdensome time
Of the year!

I had quite a lot of fun with this, and I know several others who like to put their own take on Christmas carols around this time of year. I’m thinking about making it an annual tradition!

What about you – are you ready for Christmas? What have you got planned?

Uh…

It’s been a whirlwind weekend full of family, friends, and fun. If you’d seen me, you might have mistaken me for my dear departed kitty cat, Shadow:

I feel like I’ve been all over the state this weekend, but it sure was fun, and I have a slew of things to write about in that favorite moments book I bought.

What about you – how did the weekend treat you? Are you ready for Monday?
